Hungerthon is an annual radio broadcasting event established in 1975 as a partnership between WhyHunger and Infinity Broadcasting to raise awareness and funds for the now 50 million Americans and over 1 billion worldwide that remain hungry. Over the years, Hungerthon has expanded its outreach through the help of Sirius XM Satellite Radio and several New York tri-state area radio stations including CBS Radio Group, Clear Channel Radio Group and Univision, with support from Citadel’s WABC Talk Radio and 95.5 WPLJ, WFUV and internet stations Rockland World Radio.com and Soundpress.com.

2011 marked a banner year for WhyHunger with the most successful Hungerthon in the annual event’s history, raising a record $764,000 for the fight against hunger and poverty!

Hungerthon brings a live radiothon broadcast across the country preceded by a month of events, interviews and concerts to raise awareness and funds to combat hunger and poverty across the country and around the world.

We don’t just ask why. We find practical answers to the problems of hunger and poverty by connecting people to food and by supporting grassroots organizations inventing new ways to build self-reliance and community power. Since its founding in 1975 by the late singer-songwriter Harry Chapin and radio talk-show host and current Executive Director Bill Ayres, WhyHunger has raised more than $30 million to help more than 10 million families, children, veterans and others around the world gain access to nutritious food and vital services. A Four Star Charity

For two years in a row, WhyHunger received the highest rating of four stars for excellence in fiscal management, accountability and transparency from America’s leading independent charity evaluator, Charity Navigator. WhyHunger spends 90 percent of all funds directly on programs and only 10 percent on fundraising and administration. When people donate to WhyHunger, they can be sure we spend the money responsibly.

WhyHunger supports some of the most innovative community-based organizations across the country, that are working every day, 365 days a year, implementing immediate solutions in times of crisis AND long-term, sustained solutions to the on-going crisis of hunger and poverty. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, WhyHunger’s National Hunger Hotline 1-866-3-HUNGRY is fielding calls from hundreds of families affected by the storm, connecting them with emergency food assistance, government programs, and support in their communities to ensure they get the resources they need for today and the support to get back on their feet for tomorrow. Many of WhyHunger’s long time partners in the Tri-State area are on the front lines, providing food, water and critical services to their neighbors and working in their communities to continue the work of long-term recovery.

WhyHunger is grateful for the support and tireless work of our Hungerthon volunteers. Thank you for your commitment to the fight this year, and in the 27 years of Hungerthon history!

With deep gratitude WhyHunger gives special thanks to Yoko Ono Lennon for playing a vital role in our Hungerthon tradition. Eighteen years ago, Mrs. Lennon generously allowed WhyHunger to use Imagine There’s No Hunger, along with John Lennon’s self-portrait and signature, as our Hungerthon theme and logo. Since 2008, WhyHunger has joined forces with Hard Rock International to create IMAGINE THERE’S NO HUNGER, a global campaign to combat childhood hunger and poverty around the world. With the support of Mrs. Lennon, we have raised more than $4.5 million dollars to help communities grow
enough food to provide more than 5.5 million meals to children in 15 different countries and teach thousands of others techniques for sustained food production for a future free of hunger.

Proceeds from the campaign are invested in WhyHunger’s global anti-hunger and poverty work, specifically their grassroots partners operating on the ground in countries around the world, including Kenya; Thailand; India, Haiti and the USA . This year, donations to the Imagine There’s No Hunger campaign will also go to support WhyHunger’s long-time partners in the New York and New Jersey area post Hurricane Sandy. These organizations are on the front lines, providing food, water and critical services to their neighbors in the aftermath of the storm and aiding in their long-term recovery. Area partners include Added Value in Red Hook, Brooklyn and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

To launch this year’s imagine campaign, Yoko Ono Lennon will join Hard Rock and WhyHunger to call upon everyONE around the globe to take a moment to Imagine a nourished world free from hunger, where “the world will live as One.” Fans can purchase a limited-edition bracelet, and on Monday, November 19th at 1 p.m. local time, visit celebrations at various Hard Rock locations around the globe, tweet, post, or even text the word

to donate $10 to WhyHunger and help feed a hungry child. Be it ONE bracelet, ONE thought, ONE tweet/post or ONE visit to Hard Rock locations worldwide, we can make a difference ONE child at a time to ensure that no ONE goes hungry again.

We are most grateful to Yoko Ono Lennon and Hard Rock International for their continued generosity and support resulting in changing the lives of children all around the world.

“By Imagining there’s no hunger, like what John sang in his song, we express our strong desire to bring a world in which children will never again suffer from hunger or poverty.” – Yoko Ono Lennon

32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute: To Benefit WhyHunger

WhyHunger was honored to be a part of this year’s 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute event, produced by Theatre Within and in association with Music Without Borders at Symphony Space in New York City. An acclaimed group of artists came together to celebrate John Lennon’s music, life and timeless message of peace, love and social activism. In the wake of the recent tragedy of Hurricane Sandy our partners at Yorkville Common Pantry were on-site at the show collecting non-perishable food donations, as well as financial donations to support the vital work they are doing for those in need. Thanks to all who made it an evening to remember.
